Literature Text
The last breath of this world leaves my lungs,
The life leaches from my limbs.
Making way for darkness-
In my empty body…
But my soul is still bright.
I am still here,
Though not.
The shell I once inhabited,
Has been left behind.
Abandoned in the world I knew,
I now move forward.
I do not know this place…
It is dark.
Though it welcomes me with open arms,
Embracing my fragile existence.
Where I am now…
It is dark,
But warm.
I am cloaked, safe,
Hiding in space,
Where there is no more danger,
No hurt,
No pain.
I feel it as it begins:
New flesh,
Forming over me.
I can feel every cell,
Every part of me as it grows,
Encasing me anew.
My freedom is short lived,
Though not unwelcome.
The ecstasy of newness,
Each limb as it forms around me,
Is bliss.
Pure creation…
Happening all around me.
New arms encircle new legs,
A different curve to the spine,
Changed hair brushes new skin.
Altogether familiar,
And at once not.
New eyes,
To see the world,
I am born in.
Transformed, built again,
I take in the deep darkness that hugs me close.
Then, a light.
Small, dim at first,
Then brighter through
The smoky haze.
A crescent of white floats by me,
Then another, and another…
Until the small miracles fill my gaze.
I reach out, take one,
Relishing the silken feel,
On my reformed fingers.
A petal…
The word comes to me,
Recognition from my past life.
Delicate and pure,
From a new… flower?
Born again,
Breathed new life…
Just like me.
The light grows ever larger,
Taking over the darkness.
It is bright,
It is cold.
Nothing like the warmth I was born in.
It is forceful, pushing its way in…
Toward me.
I know it is where I’m going next,
My new world.
Am I ready to face what lies ahead?
I must be.
Or the light would not be calling for me yet…
Would it?
